Accidents Happen. Is Your RV Protected When Someone Else Is Towing It?

RV transport insurance tips — know before you hand over the keys

Before you hand over the keys, here are 3 things every RV owner should check:

Tip 1

Check YOUR insurance.

There's a 99% chance your policy doesn't cover your rig when it's being towed commercially. Look for language like "coverage does not extend to a bailee for hire" or similar exclusions. If it's there — and it almost always is — you need to make sure your transporter is properly insured.

Tip 2

Get their COI.

Make sure the transporter carries proper liability and cargo insurance. The federal minimum cargo coverage is $100K, so confirm they can bump it up to cover your rig's full value — many independents only carry the minimum.

Ask them to provide a Certificate of Insurance (COI), and request that their broker list you as a certificate holder at no charge. This ensures you'll be notified if the policy is cancelled or lapses.

Tip 3

Check their authority and safety record.

Ask for their DOT number and look them up on FMCSA's free public database to confirm they're currently authorized as a for-hire carrier:

If a transporter hesitates on any of these, that tells you everything you need to know.
